A new doughnut shop has just opened in Cambridge and as a bit of a foodie, I thought it was essential that I try them out.
Crosstown Doughnuts, known for its yeast-raised sourdough base, opened on Bridge Street in Cambridge on Friday (November 12).
The London-based company, which is also popular for its vegan treats, is donating 50 percent of sales on Saturday to Jimmy’s Cambridge, a charity working to battle homelessness.
On top of doughnuts, the shop sells cookies, ice cream, soft drinks and coffee.
For my taste test, I ordered the favourites box which had a wide range of doughnuts, including vegan peanut butter and blackcurrant compote, Tongan vanilla bean glaze, chocolate truffle, matcha tea, vegan chocolate and honeycomb and Vietnamese coffee.
I also ordered a cookie box with two chocolate chips, two vegan peanut butters and two vegan oats, apricot and chocolate cookies.
The doughnuts were beautifully presented, with a wide range of flavors and vivid colors.
My favourite one based on first impressions was the earthy green matcha doughnut.
It was a beautiful colour and really stood out in the box, and being a fan of all things matcha I was very excited to try this one.
I wasn’t disappointed! This doughnut was delicious with just the right amount of matcha throughout.
My second favorite one from this selection was the Tongan vanilla bean glazed doughnut.
It was just sweet enough and wasn’t too heavy, making it the perfect dessert for after dinner.
All of the doughnuts were delicious and each one was very different, with some filled with custard and some just glazed.
I found both the chocolate ones very rich and filling, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing if you love dark chocolate.
The sourdough base tasted less like your classic doughnut and was very ‘cakey’. It’s still completely delicious and really different from picking up a supermarket Krispy Kreme!
Considering I am not a vegan, I was a bit dubious to try the vegan doughnuts but funnily enough, you wouldn’t know the difference!
The vegan chocolate and honeycomb doughnut was rich and chocolatey and it was the perfect snack.
