They may be a bit late to the party but McDonald’s have shared the news that has absolutely been worth waiting for.
Today, Thursday, September 9, after much speculation the popular fast food chain have announced an official release date for their new vegan burger and confirmed that it is in fact fully vegan.
There had been speculation and confusion online as to whether it would share a grill with the beef burgers and when it would come to your local restaurant, but speculate no longer as all has been revealed.
McDonald’s have announced that their latest release will be a “burger for everyone” with a patty co-developed with Beyond Meat.
Reassuring excited customers that it would indeed have absolutely no contact with animal based products the restaurant confirmed that it would have “a delicious plant-based patty, bespoke vegan cheese and vegan sandwich sauce”.
Although rival Burger King have already released their Plant Based Whopper (which isn’t vegan because it’s cooked on the same grill as the beef burgers), McDonald’s were in no rush as they say that they spent three years making sure they had the perfect offering.
“McDonald’s UK&I has spent three years on research and development to bring a delicious plant-based offering to British and Irish customers, and every element of the McPlant was designed with taste and quality top-of-mind – from the plant-based patty co-developed with Beyond Meat®, to innovative vegan cheese based on pea protein that tastes just like McDonald’s iconic cheese slices, and a new vegan sauce.” It said.
The McPlant was already released globally in 2020, and the UK and Ireland will be the latest places to enjoy the burger after the company sought to meet customer feedback expectations and gain full vegan accreditation.
McDonald’s said: “Based on feedback and expectations from local customers, the UK&I version of the McPlant is fully accredited as vegan by the Vegetarian Society to ensure it meets the highest vegan standards.
“The McPlant features a vegan sesame bun, mustard, ketchup, vegan sauce, fresh onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato and vegan c heese. It is cooked separately from other McDonald’s burgers and sandwiches using dedicated utensils.”
Although the McPlant will be available in 10 restaurants in Coventry from September 29 and 250+ from October 13, it sadly won’t come to Gloucestershire until January 2022, however if you find yourself in the Bristol area – they’re lucky enough to get the slightly earlier launch date.

“As with every McDonald’s offering, we take our time to ensure it meets the highest standards and is something that all our customers will enjoy.
“We are always looking for different ways to innovate and meet our customers’ needs, and with McPlant we have a delicious plant-based burger that will appeal to everyone. Whether you’re vegan or just fancy a plant-based patty, we’re confident you will enjoy the McPlant.”
It is expected to cost £3.49 in most places, raising to £4.89 in the more metropolitan areas and in the ROI it will cost between 4.50 / 7.40 euros.
