As a young athlete, Dan Bibby had one thing drilled into him when it came to nutrition: protein, protein, protein.

“You get told from a young age that you should eat chicken breasts at every meal,” the Team GB rugby sevens player said. “You’d literally be watching people downing raw eggs.”

Then, four years ago, he decided to cut meat out of his diet. “I definitely was a bit worried,” he said. “Especially as a rugby player, there are not many vegans.”

Bibby, 30, who plays Canada at the Tokyo Olympics tomorrow, is part of a growing number of top-level athletes choosing to move to plant-based diets. Wimbledon champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympian Novak Djokovic has credited eating a plant-based diet for his fast recovery
