Starbucks breakfast menu just got a new addition- and I’m here for it.
I’ve liked Starbucks coffee (specifically the Blonde roast) for years now, but I always struggle finding something to eat when I go in.
I don’t eat dairy which rules out the majority of the pastry case and toasted goods. The few that don’t have dairy in all seem to have some form of pork, which I also don’t include in my diet.
So I’ve found myself being the caffeinated but hangry friend more often than not.
When I heard that there was a vegan breakfast sandwich joining the menu I was quite apprehensive.
The menu told me that the sandwich was a Beyond Meat patty made from pea protein, which boosted my spirits as I’ve found pea protein products are usually quite tasty.
But it was the “signature tomato relish”, “tofu turmeric egg alternative” and “coconut oil based alternative cheese” that had me nervous.
Could tofu even make a satisfying egg alternative?
As I popped into a Starbucks to pick up a Blonde roast latte I asked the barista if the sandwich was any good and was informed it had actually been a huge hit – and that they’d even doubled their order due to the popularity.

So my decision was made, I was going to try this new £4.65 breakfast item.
It didn’t take long for me to have the heated breakfast sandwich in my hand and I hurried home to try it, feeling extremely nervous in case it was as bad as I thought it might be.
I plated it up and was very underwhelmed by the appearance, when I lifted the top bun I found the tomato relish was completely hidden by what I thought might be the cheese. This left the patty completely bare.
I couldn’t even see the ‘egg’ so I decided to go for a cross section, that’s when I decided this might not be so hopeless after all.
Once cut in half I could clearly see the ‘egg’, and it even looked somewhat like what I’d expect a scrambled egg to actually look like.
I took my first bite and I was really surprised by how tasty I found it.
The texture of the tofu was really nice and the cheese tasted a lot like I would expect a slice of processed cheese to.
It didn’t take me long to have finished the whole thing, enjoying every single bite of it.
The only complaint I have is from the flavour of the patty, it simply stated ‘spices’ on the ingredient list – but I could taste fennel.
Personally, I think that fennel has a strong aniseed flavour that can be quite distracting – luckily it wasn’t overpowering as the relish, tofu and ‘cheese’ worked together to give a nice balanced flavour profile.
I was really impressed with this sandwich and will definitely get it next time I find myself hungry in a Starbucks or need breakfast in a hurry.
