Extinction Rebellion supporters given a slap on the wrist for preventing the delivery of millions of newspapers were among the animal rights activists who blockaded McDonald’s main distribution centres today.

Up to 100 protesters disrupted supplies to the fast food chain’s 1,300 UK restaurants by stopping lorries leaving key sites in Greater Manchester, Coventry, Basingstoke in Hampshire and Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire.

Many shackled themselves to bamboo scaffolding and vehicles outside the entrances to the food depots at about 4am and demanded that McDonald’s stop selling meat by 2025.
